Feels like it's been an incredibly long time since I uploaded anything personal. This is one of my favourite pieces as of late, done for my 2nd book and exhibition. Hope you enjoy. <3

Photography/Direction: Zhang Jingna
Makeup/Hair: Andrea Claire
Model: Margaret White

The both of them were super incredible to work with. Thank you dears. :heart:

PS: The flowers are real~ and I really tried to do a cropped version for safe viewing, but it just doesn't really work. So sorry ;_;

a fascinating piece to say the least....i feel that there is really a lot going on here:

technically -

i'm not really much of a photographer so i won't say anything with regards to the actual photo quality, but as a picture, you have done very well in terms of composition, color choice, shape and form...in many ways this is a piece that studies contrasts, the black of her hair with the paleness of her skin; the luxuriant quality that exists in the abundance of her hair and the flowers therein vs. the hair's careful styling and perfect, constrained shaping

conceptually -

but perhaps i find most interest in this piece thought the subtle conceptual qualities it possess...back to the idea of contrasts, the subject is obviously lovely to look at, but her slightly odd expression makes it appear that she is troubled or somehow distraught, maybe even just plain disinterested....i am also interested in how the elaborate mass of her coifed hair forces her neck forward, making her appear slightly uncomfortable and as if she is looking towards something far off...her body is here in this realm, but her mind appears to be elsewhere....she is oblivious to the viewer, instead caught up in something else...

I have been an admirer of your work since I first joined DA over a year ago, and each new deviation never fails to inspire or impress. This deviation, and the rest of your portfolio for that matter, testify to your creative talent and technique.

The most ornate and exotic component of this portrait is undoubtedly the gorgeous ebony hair and wine colored flowers. Another beautiful feature is the flawless and luminescent skin of the model. I can name a variety of additional features that I admire, but what I really love about this portrait is that it is a study of contrasts.

This deviation makes a striking impression for a variety of reasons, the strongest being your choices in color and your work with the model in regards to makeup, posture etc.

The cool slate colored background creates a striking contrast against the model's skin. While it highlights the model it also conveys a certain mood. Another reviewer mentioned melancholy and that is the perfect word for it. It befits the sadness and detachment that the model's face shows.

Her elaborate hair juxtaposed to the downtrodden posture is also jarring. Usually someone who has such a regal hairstyle would be expected to have a regal attitude- shoulders back, eyes focused...confidence should be radiating out of her pores. But instead she seems to have all the world's troubles on her bare shoulders.

The fact that she is nude also lends itself to the idea that whatever is bothering her, she feels that she has been stripped to her very core- her face, hunched shoulders....all of it points to her being crushed under the weight of something. It reminds me of something that I was told as a child- no matter how beautiful someone is, if there is something preying on their mind, it will show. Be it lack of confidence or losing faith in life, her oppression is clearly present and is exaggerated when compared to the beautiful make up and hair.

You mention that you had considered cropping this photo to make it for "safe viewing". It is only my opinion but I believe that doing so would have detracted from the deviation. It would have become a photo focusing more on an elaborate hairstyle than a portrait study of this beautiful model.

Overall an outstanding portrait, deserving of all the praise it has garnered thus far and more.
